Our goal is to provide safe and joyful surroundings for the children and their teachers. This focus is consistently present in Reggio-Emilia settings, where the environment is viewed as a teacher. Visitors are always welcome in the classrooms, keeping the following guidelines in mind. They will help you as you learn to negotiate in the school environment.
Please ask the teachers before you visit the classroom. If you want to drop in on the spur of the moment, come to the office; one of us will check with the teachers for you.
Plan to be involved in whatever the children are engaged in at the moment; listen to them, and let them take the lead in conversations and activities.
Remember that we are much taller (even those adults who consider themselves “short”); try to get down on the children’s level. This includes voice volume.
At dismissal time, please stay outside the classroom and wait for the children to come out unless teachers give other instructions. On Discovery Club days, dismissal is particularly confusing for the children. The teachers are focused on keeping their eyes on the children, delivering them safely to Discovery Club.
Last, and most important, never take your child from the queue of children in the classroom or as they move from the classroom to carline or Discovery Club.
