The Reggio-Emilia approach is founded on the belief that early childhood learning revolves around and evolves from- a symbiosis of parent, teacher, and child. Attention is also focused on the classroom environment, which is regarded as a third teacher. The materials (many of which come from the natural world), use of light and sound, and room arrangement all impact the way in which children respond to stimulus, express themselves, and solve problems. Harmony within all aspects of the environment solidifies the Reggio goal of the child’s strong self image.

The classroom and studio teachers joyfully accept responsibility for creating this inviting atmosphere. They provide the environment, materials, and methods which best support the children’s exploration and creativity. To this end, UCWNS believes in ongoing professional development of its teachers. Many of our teachers have traveled to Reggio-Emilia, Italy to participate in study groups which examine and explore the Reggio approach. They participate in Roundtable discussion groups all over the state of New Jersey; attend conferences hosted by the North American Reggio Alliance (NAREA) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). They visit other schools, especially those which incorporate a Reggio-Emilia approach in their environment.
We believe that just as our children need to feel valued, comfortable, and supported, so do our teachers. Joy is at the core of all that we –children and adults- engage in each day.
